After a lengthy break, there's another class being held and went today for my 3rd *near* tango attempt. Just repeated some basic 2-8 steps and the 1st hour was over before I knew it.
The 2nd hour was voted for waltz this time and I decided to stay for my first try, since I'm just interested in learning more dancing in general. And there were less girls than guys this time round, so definitely less guilt for imposing my beginner self on the lot.
There must be a pattern somewhere. My first try at following the class and the teacher decided to try out some 'gold' level stuff too -_-
Lesson of the day:
Had always wanted to go for dance classes, but avoided the expense. So when ML asked if I wanted to join her for some tango classes at £2 an hour, I readily jump at the idea ^_^ Tried it out last week, which happened to be only her 3rd time while I was a complete novice.
It was Argentine tango, not too technical and was more of an informal class really. Anyway, my first time happened to be when the teacher decided to teach the more 'advanced' steps to the beginner class o.O managed to made it through safely without a single fall, although I was in full work clothes and heels too *due to the fact that it was quite last minute - ML, being ML, was pretty vague and only called up with details an hour before class was due to start -_- thinking that she was just waiting for my answer*. The heels probably were the most suitable shoes I have over here for such activities, and I did think all the swivel moves were certainly easier if you're on your toes *not to mention to reduce slightly the vast height differences between me and whoever my partner was :p*.
And today, after pressing ML for the actual address to attend my 2nd class, I discovered to my chagrin that I had been led to trapsed exhaustingly all over the roads in heels and taking buses last time for nothing when the hall was 15 minutes walk from my place in reality! *grrr*
Oh well, I suppose I should be grateful for being introduced to an affordable dance class *not to mention good excuse to force some exercise* that's held so close to my place after all.
By the way, also found out today that it's actually a ballroom dancing club at the residential hall which just happens to be doing tango and waltz for now - and more importantly, isn't restricted to members only ;)
Remember the cooking book I got over here?
The first thing I tried, a very simple recipe for tea eggs...
Sadler's Wells has this occasional dance club thingy which starts off with short classes and ends with club-like sessions. This time it was flamenco, so I went for it. The class wasn't anything special as expected *nothing too technical, just simple steps to try out and justify the notion of a 'class'* and the DJ didn't turn up last minute. All the same, it was affordable for a one-off thingy and I was treating it as an intro to flamenco anyway.
Of the Latin craze, stuff like tango and salsa didn't appeal to me as much as something like flamenco. Of course, I would love to learn all of it if possible but given the financial constraints, flamenco would be my first choice. It has a more fiery flair to it, sufficiently rhythmic, some stamping *but not as technical as tap*, no definite need of gymnastic flexibility, and lovely guitar music as accompaniment. Most of all *big determining factor for me*, it does not require a dance partner.
Ah, I wish I could afford regular classes in all dance varieties... I definitely need the exercise, at the very least. *particularly against the idea of going to the gym for any sort of 'regular exercise'* Surprisingly, I woke up the next day without any pains or aches. Just go to show it wasn't that much of a class in the first place and didn't warrant any exertion of efforts. Or maybe I'm just too self-conscious again to try my best...
... dance, anyone? =(
Been wanting to knit a cover for my new hard disk, to offer some protection and keep the dust off. Since I had some yarn leftover from my first project *even after using the same yarn for my 2nd and 3rd*, ended up with my own creation of a bright red cover...
Finally gave in yesterday and signed up for the resit course.
Not because I think it'll do me any good. It's not even any good. But maybe I should start thinking of it as giving away more than 1 month's worth of rent for charity...
Yeah, I am that hard to part with money. Don't get me wrong - I firmly believe in paying for its worth. And as you all know, that worth is often nil. But I guess I deserve it, for failing in the first place.
Which sorts of signal that I should be studying -_- exam's 3 weeks away.
Shouldn't I be learning something here?
Well, finished my 4th knitting project *or was it 5th?* which I had wanted to do before going back but now it's finally done.
Like my sis said the other day,
From mainly headache with a touch of flu and sore throat, it has now turned into constant hacking chesty cough. More than 2 weeks and 2 visits to the doctor's later, my condition appears to have worsen. *it's definitely the insurance card policy thingy, ruined my SPM and now it's happening again - a long, long story that I've meant to blog about but shall do so another day and spare you the misery* In fact, haven't had much of an appetite since I came back, what with all the pills leaving a medicinal taste in my mouth. Was even vomiting breakfast and lunch at one point, and bouts of diarrhea after that... Just my luck.
Maybe it's just those 'poliklinik's *you end up going back poli times and still not get cured*. Finally been feeling somewhat better in the last few days, having gone to the good old clinic near my old house - which was cheaper, at that.
Since my appetite's slowly returning and been managing to keep food in for a few days now, we finally went for the seafood dinner yesterday that I've been promising to belanja even before I came back. And my mom decided to milk the cow to the fullest -_- we ended up going to Unique Fisherman to have seafood.
Yes, that (in)famously expensive place which some people have been harping about.
*sigh*
Always wanted to have soft, wavy hair with lazy curls...
Did I mention that CE got her top choice job?
Being a junior while training at a London top salon, she needed a model for blow-drying on her first couple of days at work. And guess who was available at the last minute?
The salon must be really famous indeed *me knew not the hairstyling industry* - they had complimentary snacks *fruits, even pastry at certain times of the day* and drinks *including alcohol, and tea sets displaying their name*, which doesn't make one feel as short-changed for being charged top salon prices.
Had already been blow-dried by CE at her previous job *whose 'training' programme isn't as good as the current one*, so this is my 2nd time. With my hair being what it is now *I could easily act in a costume period epic without having to rely on a wig, or qualify without audition as a prop in a horror movie*, the best thing one could do with it is to blow dry straight.
And the stylists at this place thought that would be too easy for CE o.O So, they asked her to try making my hair curl instead.
For those who knew not me *lucky enough to not to be subjected to suffer my frequent complaints about my messy hair*, I have thick and coarse hair. Lots of it. Very stubborn. With abundant baby/short hairs.
*only way it'll look presentable is to have it straightened - or hidden in a high ponytail*
And at its current length, it's even more challenging. So, I always felt guilty for CE when she has to blow dry my hair. Plus, Asian hair isn't as easy as European.
Even the stylists admitted it'll be hard to make it curl, but CE could apparently have fun trying anyway.
2 hours plus, 2 types of mousse, lots of effort from poor CE, and many clips later, it was ready to be unrolled. Well, I would think that ordinarily one would spray some other thing to make it hold and let it cool down to set, but as we were the last ones there *my hair's fault =(*, the 2 remaining stylists helped CE to remove all the clips once she was done putting them up.
Honestly, my hair has never been subjected to so much attention before.
*it was even a bad hair day for me when I came in -_- so embarrassing*
And - surprise, surprise - it did curl! I'd always had the nagging suspicion that the only way my hair would even so much as wave properly is to perm it under high heat for at least some length of time. But CE managed to achieve that with just blow-drying. *and lots of mousse, of course*
After unrolling, I'm left with a mane of thick hair which curls at the bottom *and for some unknown reason, made me feel very like Charmaine Sheh o.O*.
In less than 15 minutes *during which we walked home from Covent Garden*, it had all fallen and wasn't Kimba-like anymore.
By the time we got home, it had settled down into lazy messy waves at the bottom.
Despite taking care to sleep on my side, it went back the next day to the usual messily coarse and thick hair that I'd always had since before I re-bonded it last year. Except that it looks browner than normal. *must be all that mousse*
... my 15 minutes of curly wavy glory.
In spite of my ardent desire to rot at home and relish the absence of sunlight in my life...
Today, the Sunday of a long Easter weekend, the place where HL usually goes for her weekly dose of tap dancing had an open day. Free classes were held throughout the day at the *apparently* famous Pineapple Studios in London. Usually, I would have jumped through fiery hoops for free dance lessons. But with my current mood *it's been mopey for a while already*, I wasn't interested.
*never thought that was possible before*
Ended up somehow forcing myself to go - it was a good opportunity and within walking distance from my place anyway, whatever I felt. HL and M were interested in the only Fusion Funk class available which was at 1pm, but places were taken up before we even reach the place. so we queued up for the tickets to Street Hip Hop at 2pm instead, it being the best choice at that time slot and choices for 3pm were worse. I didn't mind since I wasn't in much of a mood, Hip-hop/jazz-fusion/street-rap/robotic/... was never down my alley.
The 2pm class was pretty full even though we were in Studio 1, the biggest in the place. Probably because many were like us, who didn't make it to Fusion Funk and settled for Street Hip Hop instead. Oh well, one can't expect too much on open days anyway and I focused my attention on how not to embarass myself while avoiding touching anyone else in the crowded room. Needless to say, it was embarassing.
The teacher holds regular classes where she teaches a bit of the routine each week, which makes up the whole exercise by combing the steps from several weeks. We were taught three eights *er, you know what I mean?* of the steps out of her own choreography after starting us off with some stretching *this was what I knew would give me muscle pain and cramps later, rather than the actual steps themselves*. The routine was so-so and seemed to lack some rhythm or musical sense to me. But then again, this is an open day class (can't bring in any really good moves) and perhaps street hip hop was meant to be like that (so as to be able to fit with whatever song chose). And so, for an hour, we went through the steps again and again, faster with each different song accompaniment, split into 2 groups to take turns practising, ... and all the time I was doing my best to avoid stepping onto anyone or being crashed into, while trying my best to appear inconspicous *hardly possible, me being one of about 2 Chinese in the crowded studio, and the much larger one at that -_-*. Even forgot to steal glances at HL and M, just to see how they dance.
HL has been taking lessons for a long time and M does classical Indian dance, both of them I have not seen dancing at all throughout our school life (plus CBN was one of those all-girls school where half of every school performance would inevitably involve some form of dancing or other). Wasted my change, it seems.
All in all, it wasn't taxing at all *the learning part, I mean - not the supposedly warm-up stretching exercises at the beginning or the ongoing mission-to-avoid-acute-embarrassment part* and I sweated only a bit. There were a couple of cramps here and there during warm-up stretches *which was to be expected since I haven't done any exercise in ages, much less trying to stretch properly in a crowded open day free class* and I was glad that the next day was a bank holiday *which I know I would spend most of it not moving around much so as to not agitate the ache in whatever little bit of muscle I still have*.
So... that was my brief encounter with street hip hop. And we went for a late lunch of tapas at La Tasca after that.
Just realised something
in every TVB show he's starred in, Dayo Wong has to appear in drag?
*it's a conspiracy!*
Ok, nothing new.
... so as not to miss this leap day, will just post something for the sake of it lar
Obviously sorely dw-deficient... still o.O
This might actually last the longest. Or maybe because I haven't anything else to focus on, now that it's busy at work.
Anyway, finished some knitting projects last week but haven't any mood to blog about anything at all. Ok, it's not some - just 2. In fact, one and a half to be precise: a mini-scarf and an enlarged version of the hat I made previously...
*grin*
Ah, the first day of the new year...
What with being away from home and no relatives whom I could feasibly visit without taking flight, I'm naturally spending it relaxing as much as possible ;)
Started the day with the vegetarian dish I made earlier specially for this occasion *my family goes vegetarian for half the day*. Usually, I would be having lychee chinese tea - but since I didn't bring any over, had some 'chinese sencha green tea with natural lemon' from Jacksons of Piccadilly instead.
Yup. It's happened again.
It's Chinese New Year eve, and it's my birthday too ^_^ both my first since coming here. Last time this happened was about 11 years ago...
*personally, I'll rather have them on different days so that I can celebrate twice :p*
Being pretty much anti-social, I preferred not to go out today unless absolutely necessary. One's supposed to be home on CNY eve, and this is just about as home as I can get.
Of course, CNY eve dinners aren't the same without the traditional CNY dishes. So here's the main dish of the night...
...hou si fatt choy...
...spot the mickey...
...souvenir corner...
...CNY-eve-cum-reunion-dinner-cum-birthday-bash...
...red hat...
