Pirates of the Caribbean

Ahoy!

Yes, finally got to see the third instalment of the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy.

Went yesterday to the cinema to watch At World's End. Think I enjoyed this the most of the three, followed by the first one. But all three is just great, and I dare say, better than the Lord of the Rings indeed... So much so that this warrants a separate entry in itself *aside from the fact that I have nothing to blog about* though I am sorely tempted to go on and on in the thread of "Johnny Depp! Jack Sparrow! Johnny Depp! Jack Sparrow!"...

The Curse of the Black Pearl was a great movie, and could stand easily on its own without 2 equally smashing sequels on its tail. Lighthearted, funny, with just the right touch of mystery... Satisfying on its own, with the right touch of comedy and loads of memorable moments (Captain Jack Sparrow's entrance! ...). Of course, it also left just enough of an enigma to provide a great plot line for the next 2 movies ('broken' compass, "and then they made me their chief", ...).
Totally loved it!

Dead Man's Chest was a bit lacking when compared to its predecessor (and the one following it :p), but it provided enjoyable entertainment all the same. Some parts were a tad unnecessary (the perhaps-too-long episode on cannibal island, all the dog-cum-3-stooges fighting bit on the beach, Elizabeth Swann's opening overly-dramatic-what-the-heck-is-she-doing-in-the-rain-when-her-fiance-was-being locked-up scene, her sudden adeptness at swordsmanship, ...) but also many parts worth watching (the highlight-of-the-show tri-way fight on the giant rolling waterwheel, Captain Jack Sparrow's "hide the rum", the 'broken' compass explained, introduction of Will Turner's father, ...).
Very enjoyable!

At World's End is just super cool, and it does justice as the grande finale of the first ever trilogy on pirates. Befittingly awesome scenes (duel between Captain Jack Sparrow and Davy Jones on the mast of the Flying Dutchman in pouring rain and amidst swirling whirlpool, 'Black Pearl vs Flying Dutchman' grand battle in said rain and whirlpool, Captain Jack Sparrow's many 'methods' of traversing between ships, the guest-starry appearance of Captain Jack Sparrow's father, ...) and a slightly tragic but satisfying ending. Loose ends were neatly tied up, spared but a few relatively insignificant ones (what happened to Calypso's wrath/scorn/fury/grief/whatever-she-is-supposed-to-be-doing once she was freed? *scratch head* only a torrential rain of tears from the mighty goddess of the sea? *scratch, scratch head* or was that rain of sorrow on Davy Jones' betrayal? *scratch, scratch, scratch head*), and the ending even hinted at a another exciting adventure of Captain Jack Sparrow's quest for immortality. But best to leave it at that hopeful ending, and pray to Calypso that the guys who outdid themselves with the series (kudos to them!) would never make the (worst ever) mistake of resurrecting Captain Jack Sparrow in a cheap spin-off (albeit he's not dead yet)... A very, very good movie overall... Though I can't help but nag a bit over some of the more ridiculous bits (the 2 pirates buffoon *albeit the one-eyed one does have some significance*, the 2 navy guards buffoons-of-buffoons *should have left them alone happily enough in the first movie*, a tad too much attempts at comedy *all attributable to the bald aforementioned pirate buffoon*, Sao Feng's abosolutely horrendous-and-UNNECESSARY-supposedly-suddenly-inspired-by-the-moment-but-who-are-the-scripwriters-kidding burst of Chinese poetry in CANTONESE no less *since when do Singaporean pirates speak Cantonese?*, ...). Sigh... Other than that, everthing was so cool!

Definitely the best movies in each year they're out!!!
